Experiencing God at Work
-Taylor Bartkowski, Intern
There is something special about Pregnancy Resources in the Quad Cities. Sure, their pregnancy tests and ultrasounds are free, they offer many classes for new parents, and the locations are easy to get to, but that’s not what makes it special. No, Pregnancy Resources is special for a much deeper reason: this ministry is filled with the Spirit of God, and His grace has infiltrated the hearts of all who walk through its doors. Pregnancy Resources is a place I’ve found very real, very tangible examples of Christ’s love, unlike any other ministry I’ve been a part of.When I began my internship here this summer, I expected to gain knowledge of the ins and outs of how a ministry like this one works, shadow the employees and volunteers, and get some hands on experience of some type. While I did get those experiences, what I didn’t expect was that the Lord would break my heart for His people and give me a greater capacity through which to love them.
It wasn’t until this year, my 22nd year on earth, that the Lord began to reveal to me what His love truly looks like, and what it means to care for people, even if we might not want to, and especially when we’re uncomfortable. Walking alongside the men and women who work and volunteer here has helped me to see that people have value simply because God made them, and we tend to overlook that fact if we run into people who look different than us or act different than us. The Lord has shown me this Truth in the way that our staff and volunteers care for clients, ask questions to get to know and understand their story, and extend a hand in any way that might help. They don’t do this in order to fill out a stat sheet or complete some sort of quota; no, they do this simply because they want to love on and serve a community that is in need. They do this because they realize this is what God has called the Church to do: love one another. This means stripping oneself of their flesh and putting on the Lord’s strength and Spirit in order to carry out His mission in each day (Zechariah 4:6).
While it has been a challenging and growing season, I walk away from the last few months here with a joyful heart. I have loved getting the opportunity to see the work of this ministry throughout the summer, and I am humbled to have been a small part of it.
