  • Dr. McDevitt Helps Moms Discover The Life Inside

Dr. McDevitt Helps Moms Discover The Life Inside
"I really love to see that heartbeat, see them move a little bit."

Dr. Paul McDevitt says his favorite part of volunteering is “seeing the development of the early intrauterine embryo and the signs of life. That is what I really love - to see that heartbeat, see them move a little bit.”

Many women are unaware of how their baby is developing inside them. “People are surprised to see their little baby moving around, to see the heartbeat.”

When Pregnancy Resources decided to go medical and begin offering free ultrasounds to the women we serve, Dr. McDevitt helped lead the way in getting everything set up.

Even after retiring from his 39 years as a obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. McDevitt still loves investing in Pregnancy Resources.

“I have found that volunteerism is a very rewarding endeavor. It is time well spent. It makes you feel like you’ve done something of value.”

How did Dr. McDevitt first connect with Pregnancy Resources? Someone invited him to a Banquet. You can help us connect with other potential partners when you invite your friends to our Banquet on Thursday, March 29.

  • Two Generations Invest Together for Life

Two Generations Invest Together for Life

Jodi, Phil, Joelle, and Mikah-Joy all give monthly.

“God has really put a passion in my heart for children, born and unborn. I would like to donate monthly.” This is the note we received from 19-year-old Mikah.

A year earlier, we had received a very similar note from her older sister Jodi. “I greatly appreciate all of the work that you do and would like to start contributing each month. I already pray for you often, but I feel God is calling me to support you financially.” Jodi works as a full-time nanny and also has a heart for children.

Jodi & Mikah’s parents first invested in the ministry when the girls were little. Phil played in the worship band for one of Pregnancy Resources's first Walkathons. Phil and Joelle brought their children along to the Walkathons. They also all helped as a family when the ministry moved from Rock Island to Moline.

Phil loves that he and his family were able to serve together. They wanted their kids to understand the importance of serving others.

“We were at a point when we wanted to live a lifestyle of supporting and giving to ministries that are important to us. We didn’t have a lot to give, but we felt it was important to do something,” Joelle says.

Phil and Joelle’s commitment to supporting the ministry on a monthly basis inspired their daughters to get involved. Both Jodi and Mikah-Joy are excited to be investing in life.

Why not start your own family tradition of investing in God’s work?

  • Spiritually Open

    Spiritually Open

We've had several young women express a spiritual openness this month.

     * One mom who has been coming for a while recently told us, "I just want to know more about God."
     * Three girls came to our Bible study in Moline. They asked great questions about how to look up verses in the Bible and how to know God's will.
     * Another girl called us to sign up for classes. When we shared that her toddler is too big for the free diapers we give out, she insisted that she wasn't coming for the diapers. "I just need a Bible study," she said.

Praise God for softening these women's hearts towards Him. Pray that God will continue His work in their lives. A quote we read recently expresses our heart in working with these women. "I am called to live in such a perfect relationship with God that my life produces a yearning for God in the lives of others, not admiration for myself." -Oswald Chambers

  • Cristina's Story

    Cristina's Story

I’d love to share an amazing story about a mom we helped who came to us in despair. The seeds we sow in the lives of the people we help bear more fruit than we initially know. Cristina is a great example:

When I moved to Illinois, I was pretty lost. I had nothing but my 2-year-old son Blake, a little bit of clothes for the two of us, and my son Xander in my belly. All I knew was that I had to leave my awful situation in Michigan. My children’s father was an alcoholic and addict. He had become very abusive. I had to get out.

It was at this time that one of my neighbors told me about Pregnancy Resources (CPC at the time). She told me about the programs they had for diapers and clothing. I was really struggling so I got in touch with Pregnancy Resources and started meeting with services coordinator Jeri regularly.

We watched videos about Jesus and talked about them afterward. We also talked about things that were going on in my life. We always ended the session with a prayer, which I also needed, although I didn’t quite realize it at the time.

Then in 2004, I found out I was pregnant again. I had been raped by someone very close to me, and I didn’t know what to do. That’s when I decided to have an abortion. That’s also when I spoke with Kathy at the Moline Pregnancy Resources center. She told me I had other options.

Kathy educated Cristina about abortion procedures and risks, and gave her info about adoption.

Kathy told me about all the great people out there who couldn’t have children and who would love my child so much. I told her I would think about it.

Later, I went to Planned Parenthood and paid for my abortion. When they called me back to the room, they did an ultrasound. I asked if I could see it. They said that it would be better if I didn’t. I started to cry and asked her to let me be alone for a few minutes. It was then that God told me to leave that place, that I was doing the wrong thing.

Cristina returned to Pregnancy Resources after choosing not to go through with her abortion. She was much more open to adoption. With the help of a workbook and videos, Kathy helped Cristina know what to expect emotionally as she made an adoption plan. They spent many appointments together and talked about how God would strengthen her to do what was best for her child.

Kathy says, “I visited her in the hospital after his birth and she was beginning to think that parenting him was what she wanted to do.”

After Andy was born, I decided to keep him at home with me. But when he was ten months old, I realized that it was way too much for me to handle, especially with the other things that were going on my life.

The seeds we had sown were bearing fruit. Andy was adopted by a loving family.

I get to see Andy and his family regularly. Andy knows how lucky he is to have 2 moms!

Kathy often thought of Cristina and prayed for her. Cristina had moved and we lost track of her. But God knew right where she was, and He was in the process of bringing her to Himself.

Cristina stopped by recently (after almost 6 years) with baby donations. That’s when she told us the rest of her story – all that had happened since she last saw Kathy, including overcoming an addiction. She said she wanted to “give back” now, and part of giving back was writing her story for us.

"I have now found a loving relationship with Jesus Christ. I’ve been baptized, and I belong to an awesome church. I have a good job, a Christian man that loves me for me, a house, and a great life. I owe this all to God’s grace and the spiritual changes He has made in my life."

We were thrilled to hear how God had used all that we had sown into Cristina’s life. Not only was little Andy’s life spared, but Cristina’s life was changed forever by the love of Jesus!
